Sitting in the movie theatre, she was sad to think that her son wouldn't get the experience of going to the movies because of his low vision. But much to her surprise, he does love going to the movies! From riding in the elevator to the adjustable seats, it's a great experience for him.
Our panelist Brandon adds that he has braille technology that makes it possible for him to enjoy movies as well.
"It helps make you more confident to know your'e not the only one experiencing these things, living this way."
As a kid, Jennifer never had the opportunity to connect with other people who were visually impaired. "I sometimes lived in a bit of a bubble," she shared on a panel at the Family Connection Conference.
"I wish I had known then that meeting people, like Wallace and Brandon and even the parents of children who are visually impaired, how impactful that would be, how much we can learn from each other, how special it is to have the kind of community that PRRF creates."
Sometimes it's easier to blend in and try to be like everyone else, she said. "But having met the people here, I wish I had realized how important that is as well. The visually impaired community helped me grow as an independent person, but also offered me a community to rely on with others who share my experiences."
“If I could go back in time, I'd remind myself it’s all going to work out eventually.”
Asked what's one thing parents shouldn't worry about, Chuck and Donna Walls shared the ways in which they supported their son in picking a sport he could safely play with his rare retinal condition.
