We’re delighted to welcome Taengkwa Marie Sturgell as the newest writer on the PRRF blog!
Taengkwa was born in Thailand and has been blind since birth because of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). She came home to America with her adoptive family in 2007, grew up on a farm showing 4-H animals, and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.
Her new series, "Through Taengkwa’s Eyes," invites you to see the world from her point of view. In her first post, “Where My Story Begins,” she writes:
“With my eyes, I can see light. But with my heart, my experiences, and the guidance of God, I am able to see so much more of the beauty in the world.”

Today is #WhiteCaneAwarenessDay. For many kids living with blinding retinal diseases, a white cane is a tool for independence: getting to class, exploring, and finding their own way in the world. 🦯 When you see someone using a white cane, give them the right of way. At the Pediatric Retinal Research Foundation, we support families impacted by pediatric retinal disease while we champion the quest for a cure. #WhiteCaneDay #PRRF
Happy White Cane Day to all the cane users in our PRRF community! 💙 We’d love to see you out there. Share a photo of your child with their cane and tell us where it takes them.
